Santa and the Shelter Pets

Old Santa Claus One Christmas Eve

Had extra gifts he planned to leave,

Not toys or books or candy sweet,

But furry friends for hearts to meet.

He stopped at all the shelters cold,

Where dogs and cats, both young and old,

Sat waiting in their kennels small,

For loving homes to heed their call.

"Come with me now," in a voice so kind

Tonight we'll leave no pet behind.

Each child who's wished upon a star,

Shall have a friend, no matter how far.

The puppies wagged tails with joy,

The kittens purr'd upon his knee,

Some rabbits hopped and hamsters too,

All off to homes where love was true.

With chimney-tops and winter’s chill:

He flew with purpose, flew with skill,

To houses where good children slept,

Who had all promised pets would be well-kept.

Where'er he found a gentle heart

With longing to give a second start,

He left a dog whose eyes shone so bright,

Or a tabby cat so soft and light.

To some he brought a puppy small,

Others a kitten, orange or tall;

Each matched with care to girl or boy,

Who'd treat their pet not as a toy.

No animals remained in the cages alone,

Each found a family, a forever home;

For Santa knew the greatest gift,

Was love that gives the souls a lift.

As he flew back through the snow,

His heart was warm with Christmas glow,

For shelter cages, once so full,

Now empty stood ~ a miracle.

So children, if you wake up to find,

A furry friend of any kind,

Remember Santa's special care,

And love your pet beyond compare.
