They Walk in Mercy

They walk in mercy, through dusk and dawn,

Of alleyways and parking lots forlorn;

All that is best, of patience and of care

Meet in their purpose and their steadfast prayer:

Thus tempered to that gentle light.

Turning feral's fear into trust at night.

Another saved, endless litters less to mourn,

Tattoo or eartip marking freedom newly born;

Midnight feedings in the rain and cold,

Frightened eyes that slowly grow bold;

Where healing hands have gently pressed,

A colony finds safety, warmth, and rest.

And in that work, and through that vow,

So hard, so kind, with eloquence,

The lives they save, the pain they stem,

Tales of nights in goodness spent,

Sound souls, at peace with helping them,

Hearts filled with love, true innocence!
